Naturopathy among all the natural therapeutic approaches best addresses obstacles to cure. Removing obstacles to cure include revision of diet, detoxification of the tissues and opening of the channels of elimination, improving the living environment, and counseling for stress management. The body can heal itself more efficiently through processes of waste removal and tissue regeneration when obstacles are removed and with the positive encouragement of proper function through prescribed exercises, massage/body work, and hydrotherapy. The first line of medicine should always be the maintenance of proper lifestyle because 70% of all disease can be reversed by the body once obstacles to cure are removed.

The “healing crisis” is often spoken of among nature cure advocates. This is simply the body’s strong reaction to remove toxins from the body, which results in flu-like symptoms such as sleepiness, fatigue, headache, loss of appetite, etc. This reaction does not always occur and the severity of the reaction depends on the amount of toxins the body needs to eliminate. Naturopathic methods help to encourage this reaction as smoothly and as comfortably as possible. It is quite natural to feel a little more discomfort before you start feeling better. When the body is healing, it is necessary to be patient and trust the doctor inside.

Often with naturopathic methods alone, a person can regain health and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. For example, lets look at M.T.’s situation when he first came to see us. M.T. is a 47 year old school administrator who complained of frequent bowel movements, which his medical doctor diagnosed as Crohn’s disease. Over the years, he had tried various health food supplements and tried eliminating some foods from his diet but nothing seemed to provide any long term consistent relief. We evaluated his situation and placed him on a diet free of wheat, oats, barley, rye, corn, and dairy. We asked him to eat brown rice products and to avoid added sugar. We gave him some simple home remedies/self-help tips to follow such as chewing his food thoroughly before swallowing, rubbing his abdomen for a few minutes after each meal, and dry skin brush before showering. Within two days he noticed a significant change in frequency and consistency of his stool and continues to do well.
